Be Part of The One City Summer Initiative

 

Mayor Gray’s One City Summer Initiative is intended to be a partnership between District agencies and community-based organizations benefitting DC children, youth and families. With that in mind, we’re inviting all CBOs to list their summer programs, activities, and events on the One City Summer website.

 

Listing your programs on the site will promote your activities to youth and families, potential volunteers, and potential District agency partners.

 

Using Data to Promote Economic Opportunity

The Community Foundation’s Greater Washington Workforce Development Collaborative released a new policy brief, Beyond Good Intentions: Using Data to Promote Economic Opportunity. The brief makes recommendations on how to improve the District’s outcomes for workers by strengthening its capacity to collect, analyze, and use data, setting forth a vision for instilling a data-driven culture in the District’s workfo

Youth Homelessness Report Released

 The DC Alliance of Youth Advocates (DCAYA), a coalition of more than 120 youth-serving organizations, today released the first study on youth homelessness in the District.  The study,From the Streets to Stability: A study of youth homelessness in the District of Columbia, was completed over the course of two weeks in mid-March by DCAYA Senior Policy Analyst Maggie Riden and a team of volunteers.

DCPS Releases RFP for Parent Resource Centers

DCPS has announced the release of an RFP to operate three DCPS Parent Resource Centers (PRCs) located in Wards 1, 7 and 8. PRCs are being re-instituted to provide parents and caregivers learning opportunities, workshops, training, and access to DCPS and community resources. DCPS seeking to partner with organizations that can provide a variety of high quality resources, services, and opportunities to parents, guardians, and families.

OSSE to Host Town Hall Meetings to Discuss “ESEA Flexibility” Request

As part of the process for developing the “ESEA Flexibility” request for the District of Columbia, OSSE wants to engage a wide range of stakeholders to communicate information about the request and to gather feedback from a variety of perspectives. This will help OSSE build a strong request that will: support student achievement across all District of Columbia elementary and secondary schools, meet U.S. Department of Education principles, and be ready for successful implementation upon federal approval.

The National Alliance to End Homelessness projects an increase an increase in homelessness

Last week the National Alliance to End Homelessness released a paper entitled "Increases in Homelessness on the Horizon," detailing projections that, in the next three years, homelessness in the United States could increase by an estimated 5 percent, or 74,000 people.

DCAYA Releases Preliminary Findings from 2011 Homeless and Unstably Housed Youth Survey

 

Between March 7th and March 21st, at over 70 sites across the District, the DC Alliance of Youth Advocates surveyed 490 unaccompanied homeless or unstably housed youth and young adults between the ages of 12-24. The preliminary findings are availble in PDF format here.

College Interns Sought for Youth Development Jobs at DPR

The DC Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation (Trust), Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), DC Child and Family Services Agency (CFSA), the DC Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), and the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services (DMHHS) are partnering to launch a youth development college intern program that will provided additional support to DPR pools in anticipation of the rise in pool usage by youth this summer.

DCAYA to Co-Host Mayor's FY'12 Youth Town Hall

The DC Alliance of Youth Advocates will be partnering with the Executive Office of the Mayor to host the Mayor's FY'12 Youth Town Hall meeting on Saturday, May 21, 2011.

This is a great opportunity to ask Mayor Gray  specific questions about his proposed budget and to bring his attention to the very real impact that the budget cuts are going to have on youth in DC. We hope to see a large number of youth and youth service providers at this event so be sure to sign up!

 

Paid Focus Group Opportunity for African-American Males (16-20)

 

 The DC Department of Mental Health's Capital CARES initiative is seeking input from young people regarding mental wellness issues specific to DC Youth. MEE Productions, who is partnering with the DMH is recruiting African American males ages 16-20 to participate in a focus group to be held Thursday, April 28th 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Capital CARES (821 Howard Rd. SE, Washington, DC 20020).

DCAYA To Conduct Homeless Youth Survey in March of 2011

Join DCAYA and Participate in an Exciting Volunteer Opportunity! The DC Alliance of Youth Advocates, in concert, with George Washington University and the Interagency Council on Homelessness will be conducting a survey of homeless and unstably housed youth from March 7-21, 2011. Why A Youth Homelessness Survey? • The current homelessness systems across the United States are lacking vital information regarding the population of homeless youth. Our goal is to shrink the knowledge gap and develop effective policy responses to the issue of youth homelessness.
